One Child Policy

The One Child Policy... good or bad?

The one Child Policy has been a factor in China since 1979.  This policy restricts married, urban couples to having only one child. There are some exceptions in the cases of twins, rural couples, ethnic minorities, and parents without any siblings themselves.  The One Child Policy has been known to pressure people into having abortions, and even forcing sterilization.  Some believe that the policy has had a positive effect on China for many reasons.  The Policy has prevented more than 250 million births between 1980 and 2000, and 400 million births between 1979 to 2011.  The fertility rate in China fell from 2.63 births per woman in 1980 to 1.61 in 2009.  The country of China is known to be very overpopulated, so some believe that the Policy has allowed the countries population to stay stable.  A 2008 survey undertaken by the Pew Research Center stated that 78% of the Chinese population supports the policy.
Others believe that the One Child Policy has done nothing but negatively effect that country of China.  Some people believe that there could have been other measures taken to decrease the population.  Others believe that the effects of the policy are being exaggerated.  Some believe that is it violated their human rights and choices.  They believe that they should have the right to decide how many people they want in their family, or how many kids they want to have.  A lot of people believe that the Policy is forcing abortion upon people.  The Policy has caused many problems in China including the huge decrease in the amount of females living in China.  Abortion, neglect, abandonment, and even infanticide have been known to occur to females being born in China.  Currently, 114 males are being born for every 100 females.

The One Child Policy has had many huge effects on China and it's population... but have the effects been good... or bad?
